Thornton Hall was built in the mid-1800s and was the home of the Bamford family, Liverpool shipping magnates. It retains some of the original decoration, including oak carvings and the ceiling of the Italian Room (now the main restaurant) in leather with inlaid mother-of-pearl.
Martins Bank, Liverpool, is reputed to have hidden its gold reserves in the hall's cellars during the Second World War, with a destroyer standing by in Wallasey Docks in case of an emergency evacuation
